Hannaford Named Official Supermarket of Dempsey Challenge

LEWISTON, Maine – Hannaford (www.hannaford.com) has signed on as the official supermarket of the second annual Dempsey Challenge presented by Amgen, a non-competitive run, walk and cycling event benefiting The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing. The Dempsey Challenge offers a 5K and 10K run/walk on October 2 and cycling routes of 10, 25, 50 and 100 miles on October 3. All events will begin and end at Simard-Payne Police Memorial Park in Lewiston, Maine.
Hannaford will provide food at participant rest stops, volunteer stations and hospitality tents. The Scarborough-based company also will serve as the presenting sponsor of the October 2 Kids’ Fun Run and provide nutrition tips and healthy recipes from their Guiding Stars program through the Challenge website and e-newsletter.
Hannaford operates 175 stores and employs more than 27,000 associates. Health magazine named Hannaford among its top 10 healthiest grocery stores in the United States, citing local product offering and affordability. Most Hannaford stores have full-service pharmacies and its new hannaford.com Web site makes it easy for customers to create shopping lists based on weekly specials, favorite recipes or individual nutritional needs.
“Hannaford is proud to support an event that encourages all of us to be active and learn about healthy choices, all while raising funds for an outstanding cause,” said Michael Norton, Hannaford spokesperson. “The Dempsey Challenge is a great example of communities coming together to make a difference.”
Following a one-day inaugural event that attracted over 3,500 participants from 33 states and four countries, the Challenge expanded to a two-day event in 2010. Actor and Maine native Patrick Dempsey participated in the 50-mile ride in 2009 alongside professional cyclists George Hincapie, David Zabriskie, Stephen Roche and Ted King. Dempsey created the event as a fundraising vehicle for the Dempsey Center and to promote physical activity as an important part of daily life.
The weekend will include a family friendly Festival in the Park which plays host to a Health and Wellness Expo, KidZone, vendor fair and live entertainment. The festival is free and open to the public. Runners and walkers will enjoy the 5 & 10K Café on Oct. 2 while cyclists are invited to take part in a participant lobster bake the following day. The Amgen Breakaway from Cancer Survivor Walk will be part of the closing ceremonies on Oct. 3.
Participants are encouraged to create or join teams through the Dempsey Challenge website to build camaraderie and assist their fundraising efforts.
